A couple of ideas come to mind:
1) Simply knowing what kind of interaction you're preparing to have and setting expectations that support it. So, if you are trying to convey a holistic idea, you literally ask for the audience to bear with you, and promise to do a second sweep through to answer all questions, etc. If your goal is just to spark dialogue, you encourage questions as you go, and facilitate very loosely.
2) Tell stories to lead the audience into a question that they cannot answer themselves in order to create an appetite for the concept you are preparing to equip them with. Or, to put it more simply, start with a strong hook.
3) For the rare audience who is open to such things, explicitly educate the client on what you are preparing to do, and basically communicate as succinctly and charismatically as possible what I'm trying to say in this post.
4) Before doing any of this, find out if the client even wants to understand things any differently. You can't force people to learn anything they're not ready to learn. Sometimes it is better to work inside another person's conceptual horizons.

I'm sure there are many more techniques in addition to these, and the story hook idea alone could become a post in itself. Actually, I just realized -- I need to post Ira Glass' (of This American Life fame) video lecture on storytelling.

Excellent thought. So how do we apply this insight to the communication of complex ideas where we need to build the house of understanding from the ground up and where our audience will not grok the house until they see the roof go on? If there is a relationship between complexity and time and attention, what are the communication rules that we should keep in mind as we do our work?

Totally, completely agree. And we're lucky to work with a CMO that gets it too. Just read a Brandweek coverstory on the work we've been doing with Domino's, and saw this great quote from their CMO:

“Probably a couple of years ago, most brands realized that they weren’t in control of their message anymore,” [Russel] Weiner said, calling up a basketball metaphor. “When you’re taking a shot, your right hand pushes it and your left hand guides it. Right now, we’re kind of the left hand...You guide it by talking about what consumers want you to talk about.”

Nice post! It is interesting to understand what makes someone the guru. Maybe experience, strategy, and performance.
